3 Things Can Cause Poor Air Quality in Your Home

Your home is supposed to be your sanctuary. The one place where you can shut everything out and bask in the calm and safety. But sometimes things that we can’t even see are affecting our everyday lives, even in the sanctuary of home. Because air is all around us—and basically invisible—we don’t often think about the air quality. At Purely Green Environmental, one of the important services that we provide is Massachusetts air quality testing.

There are many factors that contribute to the air quality in your home. Here are three of the most common.

Indoor Air Pollutants

There are several things that are considered pollutants. Some of them are obvious, like tobacco smoke or combustion byproducts such as carbon monoxide. There are others, however, that we are less likely to think of as pollutants. These include pollen, dust, and pet dander. Those things are always floating around, affecting the air you and your family are breathing. Other common pollutants that you might not be aware are in your home are mold and pesticides. Although it is nearly impossible to eliminate all pollutants, a good air purifier can make a noticeable difference.

Humidity

While humidity is less of an issue in the winter months, the air can get pretty sticky in New England in the summertime. If the humidity levels in your home are over 50%, you can accidentally create the perfect conditions for biological pollutants like mold and mildew to grow. Many people experience this problem in their basements or bathrooms. To combat excessive humidity in your home, always run the fan when you shower and consider getting a dehumidifier for your basement. If you get a model with a reservoir that you have to empty yourself, you can use the water to water your plants!

Ventilation

Poor ventilation not only keeps polluted air in your home but also circulates it around your house. If you have a central air or HVAC system, make sure that the vents are properly cleaned and that you change the filters regularly. If your ventilation system needs repairs or the filters are clogged, it can aggravate conditions like allergies or asthma. You can also open windows and doors to allow fresh air to circulate through your home when the weather is nice enough.
