Flooded Basement? The Importance of Mold Testing

mold testing

Living in New England, homeowners have the luxury of homes with basements, unlike other parts of the country where the ground doesn’t lend itself cooperative. Let’s face it; who doesn’t like the advantages that a basement provides? From additional usable square footage to extra storage space, your basement is undoubtedly used in some fashion. However, regardless of the “extras” it provides, basements are highly susceptible to flooding and water damage. Thus, mold testing becomes a staple in homeownership as well.

Whether it’s the winter thaw-out, spring showers, or summer storms, New England has no shortage of wetness from Mother Nature. Because of the constant moisture around our home, basements may become moist and damp from slow water seepage or obvious flood damage. These elements create an environment that is a perfect breeding ground for mold and bacteria. The prolonged effect of mold in your home can be hazardous to your family’s health. After any significant water damage, it’s crucial to undergo professional mold testing to assess the quality of your living space.

Mold and air quality

As we mentioned, water entry into your home is a gateway for mold growth. If left unattended, mold travels through your air ducts and wreaks havoc across the entire residence. Thus, air quality testing also becomes an essential aspect of home maintenance. At Purely Green Environmental, we specialize not only in mold testing but also in air quality testing to ensure complete remediation of all concerns.

Studies by institutions like the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) have shown a strong link between indoor mold exposure with numerous health problems, some of which develop in otherwise healthy human beings. In fact, the CDC reported on a study done by the IOM that states there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, such as coughing and wheezing in otherwise healthy people; with asthma symptoms in people without asthma; and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to immune-mediated condition. The IOM also found limited or suggestive evidence linking indoor mold exposure and respiratory illness in otherwise healthy children.

If your home has suffered water damage, it’s time to consider professional air quality and mold testing. At Purely Green Environmental, our team has successfully helped hundreds of families remedy potentially hazardous situations in their homes.
